Bottega dell’Arte

The Bottega dell'Arte: a School of Social Design

In Cambodia, many children are forced to leave school early to help support their families with small jobs with no future. The Bottega dell'Arte is a Design Craft School where young people find high-quality vocational training. Il Nodo offers them an apprenticeship stipend (per diem) and a meal a day for the duration of the courses.

BOTTEGA DELL’ARTE – PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • To train young people from situations of extreme social and economic hardship, offering them the opportunity for a profession and a better future.
  • Revitalizing traditional craftsmanship through outstanding design, nurturing the natural talents of young people.
  • Enhancing the quality of life of students and their families from day one.

The Training Program: Khmer Culture Meets International Design

  • Local master artisans teach students the traditional art of working with silver, textiles, and wood. Italian designers and artists nurture their creativity and bring a broad perspective on global tastes and trends. Throughout the courses, students learn to become independent and responsible adults while gaining a deeper appreciation of the richness of their own culture.

A Real Career, Not Just a Side Job

Through its three specialized programs, the school shapes students into skilled design artisans — equipping them with professional expertise, a meaningful trade, and the opportunity to shape a better future.

Academic Recognition

Since October 2015, the diploma from Il Nodo’s Design Craftsmanship courses has been officially recognized by the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training of Cambodia. The qualification is valid throughout all ASEAN countries.

In collaboration with designer from all around the world, students from our bottega dell’arte have developed various projects over the years

One school, three courses:
Silver, Textile and Metalwork

MY OWN HANDS: DESIGN AND SILVERSMITHING

Bottega dell'arte

Since 2009, La Bottega dell’Arte has offered a two‑year program in Silver Design. Students learn the art of metalworking and how to enhance their natural handcrafting talent through design. By the end of the course, they are able to skillfully create silver and other metal jewelry and objects. As part of the project Gioie d’Autore, Italian artists and designers have donated 90 unique designs to the school, which students have transformed into an exclusive collection of signature jewelry pieces.

DESIGNING GIRLS FUTURE: Textile Design and Craftsmanship

Bottega dell'arte legno

In 2018, a shorter course was launched exclusively for girls – the most vulnerable segment of the young Khmer population. An all-female team of designers created exclusive jewelry and bags specifically for the course. Paola Lenti Srl supports the project by providing the raw materials: ropes and fabrics in wonderful colors, which in the hands of the girls are transformed into unique and innovative objects.
The most important outcome is that the girls can engage in dignified and creative work, far from the risk of exploitation.

WOMEN CRAFTING THEIR FUTURE: DESIGN AND METALWORKING

Born in 2024, this course is designed for young women aged 18 and over, coming from vulnerable backgrounds, who wish to learn the art of jewelry-making and build a better future. During this immersive program, lasting just six months, participants acquire basic skills to work in the jewelry sector and refine their practical abilities. At the end of the course, they have the opportunity to secure a professional contract with a prestigious jewelry manufacturing company, thus opening a direct pathway to employment and professional growth.
